I am thinking of applying RD for Rice. I have had A's in all math and science courses and A in a comp sci class at the local university as well as an A in multivariable Calc at the university. Where I run a problem is my English has never been great. I have gotten almost all B's but I have challenged myself the past 2 years taking both English AP classes. I have a low class rank because of this and because I am at the top HS in Colorado (at lease public). I also don't test well and got a 550 on CR for the SAT but I have a 740 Math (which I feel is low for myself) and a 560 in writing. on SAT2 I got an 800 Math 2C and 750 Chemistry. A few other things I have done are I self studied BC calculus and got a 5 on the AP test and I was awarded with honors in the National Chemistry Olympiad test (that is top 150 in the nation). I have a few other little things like mock trial and a great passion for running but what I posted is the gist for academics. So the bottom line is is it even worth applying to Rice or will my test scores and English grades effectively get my rejected.

You should sign up for the January 28 SAT and study REALLY hard until then to get your critical reading and writing scores up. I'm sorry, but mid-500's are really low. Just bring those scores up and you'll be hard to reject.

I have already taken the new one 2 times and took the onld one once I just can't seem to bring it up. It ****es me off greatly. So would you say with mid 500s I would stand almost no chance at rice?

If you really like the school, apply anyway. I don't think getting mid-500s on your SATs is going to automatically take you out of the running, especially if you're strong in other respects. It's definitely worth a shot.

BTW, which high school do you go to?

Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado springs. When I say top I know we won some award for the top last year I think. If we aren't the top we are very very close just competing with chery creek and maybe a few others.

well--you're not planning to major in a humanities/soc sci field, are you?

nope I am planning on physics. So you blieve they will overlook my bad SATs in english as long as I show my interest is completely in science

I had a 500 in math and I still got in. I still think that you should take the ACT though. Even though I scored in the 43rd percentile for math on the SAT I ended up in like the 82nd percentile for math on the ACT. You might do much better on the ACT and it could swing things in your favor.
