<p>One thing I’ve discovered about asking people to prom (especially after never asking people out for any other occasion) is that there’s no permanent damage, although there sure as hell was a bit of temporary. </p>
<p>Don’t ask in a big way though, because you don’t want to risk double embarrassment in case she says no. I think the hallway thing is perfectly fine, and might I suggest you qualify it first. Maybe begin with “I don’t know if this is strange but…”? </p>

<p>she turned me down . Oh well, I was kinda expecting it, since she told me a few months ago (before I liked her) that she didn’t really want to go prom in general. I’m still really glad that I mustered up the guts to ask her; that in itself was something that I would never expected to have happened just a week before.</p>
