I'm an international student from China. I will be a UC Berkeley EECS student this fall.
CalSO(Cal Student Orientation) is strongly recommended for new freshmen. but CalSO dates
for college of engineeing that may be viable for me are only : June 10-11 June 24-25;
could someone tell me which one should I attend or neither?
first date: June 10-11 is too early for me. I may not get my visa by that time. Furthermore,
I will attend summer session C which begins on June 20. Between 11-20, where
can i stay? Money is very important to me(my family isn't rich at all!!!).
sec date: june 24-25. on morning of June 24, I will be taking my math class of summer
session.I'm worried abt this time conflict.

may be i can notify berkeley that i can't attend? that way,office will send me emails containing enrollment information in July. But berkeley's website says students who don't attend CalSO receive lowest priority in registration of fall semester classes!!!

I’m sure your instructor will understand if you need to miss a day or two of classes to attend CalSO. Just make sure to tell the instructor early and make plans to catch up on your homework/quizzes/tests.

For summer you can probably sublet an apartment for cheap. Try the Cal housing office for assistance.

I didn’t attend CalSo and sometimes I wish I did.

CalSo allows you to get to know your peers better, and in a smaller, more controlled environment. You get to know a bit more about the campus and how the school works and whatnot. The priority for registering classes thing will cause you to rip your hair out no matter what. Though, for the sake of first semester, you might want to just go to CalSo for that.

However, I’m not brooding over the fact that I didn’t go to CalSo. You figure things out as you go along. You meet people in classes and student groups. I would argue that I actually know a bit more about Cal than my roommates who went to CalSo. Sure they have a leg up for, maybe, the first month or two, but if you’re proactive, you’ll catch up soon enough, or even pass them.

Like the other poster said, there are plenty of people looking for subletters right now. You can either go through the CalRentals/CalHousing website to look for housing, or just look on craigslist, and make sure to select east bay or specify Berkeley.

the international house should be open that week. contact berkeley about it.
