Yep, it's after sophomore year and no later than end of junior year. You can start getting advising for it earlier, but as far as applying goes you can't do it until you've shown BU you're a competent student (aka maintained above a 3.0).

I'm pretty sure ED isn't pending acceptable FA. That's why it's kind of controversial. Early Action, however, isn't legally binding.

Honestly, I don't think applying ED to BU is going to improve your chances that much. It isn't that competitive.

But the admissions game kind of blows my mind, so who am I to say? :)

Also what is the area around BU like?
I have only been to Cambridge, but BU has most of Commonwealth Ave..
Do you normally just go to Cambridge if you say want something to eat?

Does BU have research opportunities with other universities in Boston?
If I remember correctly a few BU Undergrad where working on a Dark Matter project at MIT.

There are plenty of places to eat around BU, plus campusfood.com will be a good friend of yours. Newbury Street is not that far down from East Campus, less than 5 minute walk. All in all, you won't have trouble finding food around campus. You can also head over to Cambridge by taking the greenline to park street and taking redline over to cambridge (MIT or Harvard Square Area) for a ton of other options.

BU is a research university, and as such, they have a ton of research opportunities. It is also not hard at all to find opportunities at other universities around the area. Heck, MIT even posts job openings on BU StudentLink asking for some people to help on a project they're developing that parallels OpenCourseWare. The same with Harvard. Harvard's business school also posts a lot of opportunities for BU students to go help out in the IT department. Boston is a very college friendly area, you won't feel too excluded from other college's resources within a reasonable limit.
