Hey everyone I was just wondering how hard it would be to get into good med schools if i'm at a bit of a disadvantage. I've heard that it's really hard to get in especially from CSU's (I got to CSU Monterey Bay) and that the room for error is literally 0. On top of that i'm asian, which means i'm going to have to do THAT much better in order for schools to recognize me as a strong applicant.

Does this mean that i'm going to have to get a 4.0 GPA, and a 35+ on the MCAT if I want to get into places like UCSD, UCD, UCI? (good UC med schools)

I ended up at CSUMB because of financial reasons and originally wanted to go to UCSB. I still got accepted to Santa Barbara with a 1910 SAT and 4.18 cumulative high school gpa.

All U.S. medical schools are good med schools so any of them that accepts you will give you an excellent medical education. I do not think you should limit your applications to UC medical schools. They get so many applications from top Asian students attending UCs that an extremely high GPA and MCAT scores are needed to be competitive. Also, UCs are probably somewhat biased against graduates of CSUs.

You could probably get into a number of East Coast and Midwest medical schools with GPA and MCAT scores that would not be competitive for the fairly limited number of seats found at the UC medical schools. In addition, medical schools in the East and Midwest neither know nor care what the difference between a UC and a CSU is so going to a CSUMB rather than UCSB will not be an issue to medical schools far from California.

And, no, you do not need to get a 4.0 to get into UC medical schools. After 3.8, the difference is negligible. But a 35+ MCAT would definitely help.

AZ is now accepting limited numbers of OOS students, be sure to check them when you are ready as they are about the only state school in the west which will take OOS students, another slim, but possible option is TX schools

thank you so much you guys for the advice, I will definitely consider many schools in the process of applying. I’m just a freshman right now so I have some time at least to think about it. your insight is greatly appreciated

Absolutely…there are no “so so” US MD med schools…they are all at least good. Some may be better, but they are all good…I would even say that they’re all at least very good.
