Remember UCSD makes their admission decisions based on points. UCAL and Cal do not. You still have a chance for Cal. Good luck.

So UCSD makes decisions just based off of raw numbers?

Pretty much. If I remember correctly, they have some sort of points based system where they weigh your grades/scores and extracurriculars. If you’re above a certain cutoff, you’re in. It was possible to not do any extracurriculars at all and still get into UCSD if you had a high enough scores and grades.

I’m in the same boat here. I thought it was rather strange. What’s your major?

actually i have been told that UCLA is more numbers (they had 61,000 applicants so they used cut offs for gpa and SAT to eliminate students) and UCSD looks more at the application as a whole. From what i know UCB looks at the application as a whole as well of that im sure.

really? I thought it would be the opposite-UCLA looking at application as a whole while UCSD looks at the numbers. But I guess it makes sense considering UCLA receives the highest number of applicants.

I think- or at least I’m hoping here- that UCLA and UCSD are the ones that look at GPA the most, and that UC Berkeley values the overall candidate- extracurrics, SATs, awards, etc- more than the GPA alone.

Nope, UCSD uses a points formula. Points for GPA, SAT, EC’s, challenges, leadership, etc. I think the points needed this year was around 8000. My son applied to all three and this is how they did it last year. UCLA and UCB do not do that. UCLA may have a GPA cut off (don’t know if that is true) but after that, they use a holistic approach.

I guess that makes sense, all i know is that UCLA and UCB have somewhat different ways of selecting students which is why you see students who only got into UCB or UCLA and occasionally both. I guess we just have to wait till thursday to see what happens
