I have recently obtained admission into a BS/MD program at a very average private university. They have offered me a good scholarship, but its not as much as I would have liked; I believe im the only student who obtained admission into this program and didnt get the highest scholarship offer.

The scholarship is based purely on SAT(or ACT) scores and GPA. My SAT AND my ACT scores are well above what they want, but my GPA is a little bit below what they require (93 vs 95) because I go to a very competitive school. I sent them a letter asking them to reconsider my scholarship and the person i asked said they are not able to make exceptions for our academic awards that are based on GPA and test scores. A person i asked from financial aid on the phone said they usually dont make exceptions but i could try with this person, which kind of leads me to think it has been done before.

Anyways, I have received many high scholarship offers from other universities of a similar ranking (but i didnt get into the BS/MD program there).

How should i appeal to them? In my first letter i said that my other scores (sat 2, ap) were all really good, and she said no. Should i talk to the program director too? :( I kind of need the money because my med school is 70k/year (including board though).

bumping to top even though it hasnt been that long. Please guys, help me out?

You can try, but you need to prepare for what you’ll do if you don’t get more merit money.

Is it worth the extra money knowing that if you keep your GPA up you’ll get accepted to their med school? That is worth something.

What are your parents saying? How much will they be paying? Did you get any need-based aid?

Is this Drexel?

@mom2collegekids
No this is not drexel.
Even if I dont get the scholarship money, I would still attend this school. I didnt get into my second choice college (UCLA), and this school was my number one choice by FAR (and still the cheapest one I would consider (the school which I got nearly a full ride at is average at best).

My parents actually dont mind paying for my college education, but I really dont want them to. I know they will be giving me their retirement money, and even though I plan on paying all of it back I know it will be after i am a full fledged doctor before I even start handling my debt.

I’m going to this school whether i get the merit money or not; it just would reduce a lot of stress and it would be nice not working my butt off over the summer.

Well, as long as your parents don’t mind, then go to this school.
good luck!

BTW…which school gave you the near free ride? Was that for stats or what?

^yup merit (PSAT). i honestly dont even remember which one it is LOL i’d have to dig through all the merit letters

how much does it cost w.o and with the scholarship?

how much does it cost w.o and with the scholarship?

What is the dollar difference between the scholarship you got and the higher one? If your parents are willing to invest their retirement savings in your education, best be sure to friggin graduate and become a plastic surgeon specializing in Botox or something so you can pay them back.

Is the school Cal Irvine? It would help a little if you could let us know what schools you are talking about. We will not know who you are from that.

mom2collegekids is probably the most knowlegable person on here when it comes to Financial aid and she has asked you a few questions that you have not answered yet. We all would like to help you out if we can.

We may be able to find the answer through your schools Common Data Sets.

@1stcolldad: I did answer her questions lol. Post #4.

the school is st. bonaventure university. The dollar difference between the one i have now and the higher one is 12k (over 4 years).

The thing is that I plan on paying off my debt than going to do what I really love to do (probably will involve working abroad/starting my own clinic abroad)

bump 10char limmmmmmm

the school is st. bonaventure university. **The dollar difference between the one i have now and the higher one is 12k/B.

Can you clarify?

What is the other school?

And are you saying that St. B is the “guaranteed MD school” and only costs $3k more per year ($12k total). (St. B has this arrangement with SUNY-Upstate)

If so, I’d go with St. B. It’s worth the $12k to have guaranteed med school admissions. Applying to med schools and going to interviews can cost several thousand dollars…and a lot of time and headache.

Or…did I misunderstand. Please be more clear in your posts. :)

Keep in mind that there are no “bad” American MD med schools…they are “good”, “better”, “best”. None are bad.

I think the OP is stating the difference in the scholarships (the one received and the top one) are $3K/year.

^^^

Ahh…I wish the OP would write the details in a more clear fashion…

School A (with BS/MD)
COA
Merit
Other aid
Family contribution

School B (no BS/MD program)
COA
Merit
Other aid
Family contribution

I’m not deliberating between schools though; this is the one I want to go to for sure (and if I didnt, the college which gave me the generous scholarship wouldnt even be the second choice). I was just trying to get more aid through emails and was wondering if any of you have had experience with such a situation.

Erins dad is correct by the way. The scholarship I want to get (at the school I want to go to) is 3,000 dollars more than the one I received.

Estimated Family contribution is high, so i’m out of the run for need-based. I am planning on paying them back the money starting in 10 years (like a loan), which is why im looking for scholarships.

Call and ask. They may be able to come up with $3K a year for you. If not, you can earn $3K in a summer.
