Should I believe these??

I came to read these in a review website that collects students' views. any opinions about these comments???

Kenyon College is an excellent school if you are a certain type of person (described below)
1. Apathetic politically, leaning towards the conservative side 2. Somewhat preppy, mostly Uggs-wearing, North Face, J-Crew types 3. English major, Theater major, or International Studies (English majors can be pretentious at times, but the department itself in fantastic)
4. Into the frat party scene. Admissions plays down the focus on alcohol here, but if you don't drink, you will definitely have a hard time finding alternatives here. There is NOTHING to do in Gambier and the non-drinking alternatives here are very poorly attended. Freshman FLOCK to Old Kenyon to get drunk, and the parties here are not fun unless you do drink.

(Someone else this posted some years back)
A total waste of time and money. The school is prohibitively expensive ($35k a year--wow!) but the investment is not worth it. Students spend most of their time getting wasted or philosophizing, and care little about their futures. Athletics are a joke. Every department has an annoying attachment to the humanities, making for an undiverse and impractical education. Kenyon is located in rural Ohio, not conducive to success later in life. If you have a ton of money to waste, have your head in the clouds, and want nothing out of college except getting drunk--please come to Kenyon. If not, then run. Run for your life.

Will add some comments laters.....

blip, is that from studentsreview.com? see this thread. that site is crap. don't believe anyhing on it.

Yeah I agree.

I also agree. It should be called spoileddisgruntledstudents.com.

No. Students Review is like the place to get all your aggression out when you're about to transfer. There are a lot of really sketchy review sites out there... be very wary of what you read.

lol, thnks for enlightening me guys...Yeah it is frm that site..and I have been getting quite similar kinds of comment about it since I posted this thread...

I don't even go there anymore. It's so misleading. If you don't know that it shouldn't be trusted, it could stop you from applying to places you would be happy at

I am sorry for my ignorance but what does J-Crew types mean?? I have seen tht phrase being used loads of time in CC....
:p

J-Crew is a really expensive and, I guess, 'preppy' clothing brand.

I'm not very up on brands and fashions. What are Uggs, please? Are they a type of boots and are they considered preppy?

.And I heard Uggs were goggles...:p....Is that right???

Uggs are sheepskin boots. I admit to owning a pair, for two reasons:

1) They're soooooo comfortable.
2) I'm tall and refuse to wear heels.

Otherwise you can just wear them 'cause they're trendy.

My ignorance abt trends and fashions seems to be travelling far and wide!:D

"Athletics are a joke" - really funny joke - the Men's Swim team has won the D3 26 years in a row, and the Women's team 20 out of the last 22. I guess the downside of this is that it would be very difficult to be a walk on swimmer. Kenyon is building an amazing athletic facility that's supposed to be ready this fall.

Uggs - are all over the place in Southern California. It's kind of funny to see people wearing them with tank tops and shorts or miniskirts. At least it snows in Gambier.

Visit the following link guys...and look up for comments on Kenyon College..I enjoyed going through them!

I bought the whole book. It's really useful u can find everything u need in it.

I'm a Kenyon junior, and I love it here. Its been very good to me, and, although I probably wouldn't have come here if again knowing what I do know (I came here for English and wound up doing economics) I don't have a lot of complaints. But.. well.. there is some truth to what you've heard..

1) "apathetic politically - conservative"
Actually, we're apathetic politically -- liberal. The vast majority of people voting in Gambier (80%? 90%? maybe more) voted for Kerry. The day after the election, campus was practically in mourning. Your average student is white, upper-middle class, suburban, and liberal, but really doesn't care that much about politics (or the world outside Kenyon, honestly) at all, except for when something huge happens. I don't think most people read the newspaper. There are small, intensely political people on both sides of the spectrum, though.

2) preppy
Yeah, that's true. And its one of the things that bugged me about Kenyon when I was in high school, but, honestly, I don't care now. People dress how they want to dress, and you'd be out-of-place as a punk, but.. no one'll notice if you get your jeans at a thrift store because you can't afford do get them anywhere else.. the fake-used Urban Outfitters tee-shirts were big. Which is dumb, but.. its easy to blend in without spending a lot on your wardrobe, which isn't true at a lot of places. But if you're against the preppy look for some ideological reason -- which, honestly, would be dumb -- than Kenyon isn't the place for you.

3) Yeah, we have a lot of English majors... but I'm doing economics and I don't feel discriminated against because of it. And I get a lot more attention paid to me than if I were at a school with a huge econ department.. if you're bright and you work hard, in the social sciences or natural sciences or anything, you're not going to be held back after college because you went to Kenyon. Teachers will do independent studies with you; if you're in the sciences, there're ample opportunities for research, etc.

Alcohol -- yeah, that's true. You do have to make your own social life if you want one and you don't drink.

The investment probably isn't "worth it" in terms of recouping the funds via jobs later, but.. that's true for any private liberal arts college if you're paying in full -- its a consumption good. But its a nice place, and, while the school honestly doesn't push you academically unless you seek it out, you can seek it out as much as you want -- you can challenge yourself on a daily basis via the classes you take, and professors are wonderful about helping you with it and working with you outside of class.

Hi Abby,
Thanks for posting your thoughts on Kenyon. I'm glad to hear you are happy there. I confused by what you mean when you say that you wouldn't come there again knowing what you know now. Can you please explain this a little more. Thanks.

Edit - I reread your post. I guess you are saying that if you knew English would not be your major, you might have chosen another school more known for Economics, but you are happy with the Econ dept. at Kenyon. Is that right?

I am happy with the econ department. Its non-calc based, which is different from most good schools, but we send people to very good grad schools/jobs, and the professors are so approachable.

That said, I don't think that Kenyon -- unless, maybe, you're going to go into creative writing or editing -- is worth going into a lot of debt over. And, if you're used to having an urban area nearby, the way I was, than you're really not prepared for the middle-of-nowhere-ness of Gambier. The sense of community is amazing, but in retrospect, I would probably have gone to someplace lower-tier liberal-artsy that gave me more money, or a state university honors college.

You guys might want to read a very detailed description of a visit to Kenyon by Doddsdad, a dad who is an excellent and entertaining writer on the Parents board.
They are Americans living overseas and he and his son went on a massive college touring visit last week. Of the writeups he has posted, Kenyon was his son's favorite so far.
