I am a soon-to-be senior in high school, and I want to attend UF (financial reasons + it's a great school). My question is: should I bother applying to other schools or will I definitely get into UF?

Sorry for the long post. Thank you for your time reading it.

It is always a good idea to apply at least one other place as a backup. I have known people with a resume better than yours and for some odd reason they did not get in. You never know what the admissions committee is looking for that particular day. Your chances are very good, but you wouldnt want to be left with no where to go!!! Choose another school like UCF or USF as a backup where you are sure to get in, you wont have to even write the essay or do the teacher reccomendations. Dont be stupid and get full of yourself thinking you have a guaranteed spot!!!

Thanks. My safe school is probably going to be Indiana because I’ll definitely get in, and I’ll be able to get in-state tuition.

How about College of the Holy Cross? They gave you a book prize and are one of the few schools that claim they will meet full need. Ranked 29th on US News LAC rankings.

For reasons unknown, there are kids that have been rejected with better stats. The best suggestion is to construct an essay that is sincere and explains how you will contribute to the UF community in a selfless way if you are admitted. And you certainly need some back-ups just in case.

Yeah I definitely suggest you apply to other schools as well. UF is very weird when it comes to accepting people because I have heard of people with really good credentials like you that haven’t got in.

I would say you are definitely in.

However, apply to FSU, just as a safety.

Thanks for the replies.

1980collegegrad: I don’t believe Holy Cross has a business school (I’ll be studying finance). It’s too far away, and I definitely want a large school with great athletics and a vibrant social scene.

Oh, and my essay is on an obstacle I had to overcome. I was a top junior golfer until I lost all vision in my right eye, and I had to practice extremely hard to recover my swing.
Do you guys think this is a good topic, or should I switch?

That is a fantastic and unique essay topic. Go for it! You should definitely get in, but do not take the application lightly! Apply broadly so that you have good safeties!

Do you know when we can start filling out the application and/or applying?

Last year the application opened up online on Aug. 1. My son submitted his on Aug. 2 and had first choice in housing because of it. Don’t forget to pay your housing deposit as soon as you can after you apply if you want to live on campus. :)

Thanks for all the information.

Do you guys think not having a Chemistry credit or a Spanish 4 credit will badly hurt my chances?

No, I think you should be overly confident and only apply to ONE school. NOTHING in life is ever guaranteed (except death), but you should ignore that and take a gamble, and if you’re rejected you could always go to a community college
does that answer make more sense to you?
