Should I bother applying to Wesleyan?

Hey y'all,

Wesleyan is my dream school. Everything about is seems perfect to me. It's interdisciplinary focus is exactly what I'm looking for. The fact that you can triple major is incredible (philosophy, film, physics). Plus it has an awesome liberal, active environment. Seriously, I love it.

Unfortunately, I don't think it will be easy for me to get in. I only have a 3.4 average, and while there are some extenuating circumstances involving a messy family (child services has been involved and all) life that my guidance councilor will write about, I don't think it'll help much. I have also been late to school a lot. There are some redeeming factors though. I haven't taken the ACT yet, but I usually test very well. I started a debate team at my school in freshman year and have since competed almost every weekend and organized and coached the rest of the team. I also judge middle school debate as volunteer work. Plus, I was the fiction editor on the literary mag at my school this year and I should be a co-editor of the whole thing next year. I also counseled for the rock climbing camp at the gym I climb at for the first 2 summers of highschool (unfortunately I was to busy this year) I've taken two APs so far, but I will have taken 6 by the end of next year and I'm going to take an intro to philosophy class at a CUNY in the fall.

Do you guys think I have a chance at Wes? I know it's a supper reach. If not, do you know any other similar schools that I might be able to get into?

Thanks!

Your gpa is very low for wes but the guidance counselor’s letter will help explain and you can also write about your family situation in your common app essay if you want to give even more context. Also if you have an upward trend in your grades that will help you. But even with that plus some good EC’s, wes still probably is a reach for you. I wouldn’t give up just yet-- at least not until you take the ACT-- but in the meantime here are some other, less selective schools known for liberal, active student bodies: Smith College, Reed College, Sarah Lawrence College, Trinity College, Grinnell College… that’s just what I can name off the top of my head :)

Your ec’s seem fine just get your average up to a 3.6. Also I’m taking philo104 at hunter for college now what about you?
