Should I bother applying?

I want to major in Int'l Affairs.
In-state, female.

30 ACT... 34 English, 34 Reading, 26 Math, 27 Science.
3.97 Georgia Tech GPA
8 APs by graduation, 1 being AP Env Science (2 English, 1 Language, 4 Social Studies APs)

I have 4 math credits, and I'm not even taking a math this year. (Decided not to do AP Calculus AB for my 5th credit).

Not even remotely a math or science person. So... should I?

Definitely. You have great grades. Might help to go meet the Intl. Affairs folks so that they know you are really interested.

Math might keep you from being admitted early, depending on your essay and accomplishments.

Would getting a BS in International Affairs matter, as opposed to a BA at a non-tech school?

I’m an International Affairs Major at Tech!!! I’m a freshman, and I actually really like the program here and chose Tech over UGA/Berkeley/Rice/etc. for a variety of reasons.

I visited UGA and was not a big fan. The campus was huge, the school was huge, but I figured I was going to end up going there for financial reasons, and they have a great INTA department. I definitely would check out UGA and see how you like it.

But I ended up getting a merit scholarship to Tech and no scholarships to UGA so here I am at Tech. I love English and History and it’s definitely weird being at an engineering school, but there have been some definite benefits.

The INTA department is small so the ratio of faculty to students is great.
We get e-mails on Thursday with job and internship opportunities everywhere.
We have people from companies come and talk to us; like this Wednesday I’m going to a business dinner for freshman with representatives from Deloitte to tell us about jobs there.
INTA students are very motivated and are often leaders on campus, such as the current student body president.
INTA students have gotten prestigious scholarships like the Truman.
INTA classes are challenging and interesting; you still have to work for an ‘A’ which I like.
We have great study abroad programs for INTA majors–You can intern at the EU, or spend the summer in Portugal & Spain being immersed in Spanish, or take an LBAT program which immerses you in languages such as Spanish, Arabic, or French.

Overall, it’s a pretty small department but it’s good and practical. The big plus is you’re surrounded by smart, motivated people and opportunities EVERYWHERE; I think at UGA you may be able to take better classes & learn cooler stuff but you may not necessarily have the same competitive environment.

One thing I hate is that there aren’t a whole lot of languages offered. We have Chinese, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Japanese, and Korean, but no Swahili or Italian. There is no focus on Africa or study abroad programs in Africa, so if that’s the region of the world you want to focus on look somewhere else.

Also, once you’re a junior you can take classes at Emory, so if you really want to take something that they don’t have at Tech you can take a shuttle there and take some classes.
