Should I bother going to an out of state public school?

I'd basically pay private school tuition, so why bother? I really like UCLA, but I'm from New York.

SOBTW, which schools have some good Japanese programs?

to be honest, no. You would basically be paying private school tuition and in addition, private schools tend to give more in financial aid than out of state public. UC’s tend to give pretty good financial aid (from what I hear) for in state, but not out state.

If it is a huge financial issue, then go to a private instead. You’re better off going to a private. Plus, UCLA even in california is a highly selective school so it is more selective for out of state.

Some OOS publics are good deals - my S is applying to two. But most aren’t.

If I have family in California, can I… IDK… count as one? xD

In general, if you’re < 24, your state of residence is that of your parents.

Most publics do not give much financial aid to OOS students, though some do (Virginia and North Carolina supposedly do). You can look for “cost of attendance” and “financial aid estimator” at each school’s web site.

OOS public schools with relatively low list prices include Minnesota, California State University schools (including the Cal Polys but not the UCs), Virginia Tech, and the public schools in the Dakotas.
