My stats are, 3.84 unweighted GPA, 4.11 weighted GPA, SAT 2070, SAT IIs: French 740, US History 710. I thought I had an okay shot, but I didn't even make the waiting list. Someone suggested that it may be because I didn't take calculus. Thoughts on whether or not I should appeal the admissions decision?

There’s no point in appealing unless you forgot to include something on your application that would’ve given you points, or you want to tell the school about extenuating circumstances that affected your grades.

If you’re just going to write them a letter of appeal that basically just says “Please?” that’s probably not going to get you into the school. You could try saying that you’ll be taking Calculus over the summer (and then actually do it). But I don’t think Calculus is one of the A-G requirements unless you didn’t complete three years of math without it, so I don’t think that alone would be the reason for your rejection.

I know somebody from my high school who didn’t get accepted into a certain UC (not UCSD) and maybe embellished a little bit on a story that explained his subpar grades. I’m not suggesting you should do the same, but if you REALLY want to go to UCSD… idk! Just saying.

It’s just frustrating because according to the College Board website, the admissions rate is 42%, and for UCI, where I was accepted, it’s 44%. And I felt like I had meaningful essays (although I’m sure everyone thinks so, too), my GPA is higher than UCSD’s average. I don’t know.

I’m not going to take Calculus over the summer (although it’s a good idea) because I’m moving, and because I’m not so great at math. I even wrote the optional essay about how I’ve tried to overcome it by working with the teacher, staying in at lunch, etc. And I got two A’s in precalculus last year.

Any other opinions?

The 42% admission rate was like for the entering class of like Fall 2006 or 2007. So that data is old before UC’s were forced to reduce enrollment. From what you have presented it doesn’t seem like you will telling the Admissions committee anything new, just seems like you will be giving them reasons for why you didn’t do stuff, basically excuses. If UCSD really is your number one choice, why not appeal? You already got rejected/waitlisted so whats the worse that could happen, you remain rejected/waitlisted. You really have nothing to lose.

Does UCSD allow appeals? I heard that because of the waitlist, they may not even allow appeals. But if they do, only appeal if you can come up with new information that would add points to you application. Take a look at other (older) threads and you’ll find a break down of what and how many points each one is worth. If there is something mentioned there that can maybe increase your points, its worth it. Otherwise, I’m sure there are lots of colleges that want you. Good luck!

Just curious, how were your extracurriculars? Your GPA and SAT’s aren’t quite strong enough to carry you through without any. I got waitlisted with around the same stats but I had 300+ hours community service, two sports, one internship, and two co-curricular programs that I think pushed me somewhat.

i dont understand why you got rejected, im sorry.

you could just appeal for the hell of it. maybe they overlooked you. the only thing that can happen is they change their mind or you get the same answer? why not?

I dont think calculus is a factor. I got in Fall 2008 just having intermediate algebra or algebra 2.

Agreed with the poster above on extracurriculars. Did you have significant ones? Also, I don’t think calculus is an issue at all because I got in without having taken it.

I’m a staff writer on the school newspaper, I was on cross country for 3 years, have work experience (same job for 4 years), secretary of a club, plus a few other things. I know they’re not stellar. I also tried to stress my passion for languages. I won an award for French, got a 4 on AP French and put it as my major, plus wrote an essay about it. One of the reasons I wanted to get in to UCSD is their foreign literature major, which lets you study two languages at once under the same major.

So I know it’s not great but I thought I had some things going for me. I’m not a minority, low-income or a first-generation student or anything, but I can’t help that.

^ Call UCSD admissions. They will tell you how many points your application got and how many you needed. They will tell you what you got points for and what you didn’t. It’s pretty cut and dry with them. Good luck!

You do have some great ECs and stats… and any other year before (including last year) you probably would have gotten in. But keep in mind that the applicant pool for college is just plain ridiculous now. Looking at it, if I had applied this year to UCSD with my stats… I can guarantee I wouldnt have gotten in.
