I honestly don't know if I'll get in because I totally messed up my first marking period grades for senior year. My mid year report is going to awful... will that affect my admissions decisions?? JHU is definitively a reach school for me i fully acknowledge that but do I have any shot at all of getting in?

my midyear report will be the death of me. I’m doing awful this year.
and vindonnus, my word choice stems from the fact that I have no idea if I even stand a shot of getting waitlisted, nevertheless getting admitted. Sorry if my lack of confidence wasn’t to your liking.

I’m a freshman at Hopkins, and I can honestly say statistically you look far better than I did applying to college, haha. I don’t claim to know much about how the admissions committee does their do, but I remember from helping on an info session that it’s more about the content of the character of the applicant than anything else. Of course, grades are important, I mean, this IS Johns Hopkins University, but it’s not the end-all-be-all, so I don’t think you should chance yourself on your grades alone.

The downward trend in grade is something to worry about however, and there really is no nice part to that. You simply DON’T want a downward trend in grades when you’re applying to any college, not just Hopkins. But to ask if you should bother applying is another beast. Of course you should. Like I said, I was statistically a worse student than you are and I got accepted, so you honestly never know what can happen unless you try. I would just say to make sure to bring out who you are in your essay since that is the way to show the admissions board that you’re an actual person and not a manufactured A+ cutout.

Hope this helps and gives you the confidence boost to apply. :)

I agree with kwasford. your academic statistics are just barely under what mine were, and you have MUCH better extra-curriculars than I did. The lower grades are a little bump, but it’s nothing that’ll disqualify your application. From what I see, you’d be a strong applicant. Don’t let a few speed bumps slow you down (unless you’re actually driving-haha). I know people with much lower grades get in. Just stand out in your essays and interview (if you choose to have one) and e-mail professors related to your intended major (to show your interest). If you do that, you’ll have a good shot of getting in.

Your chances are pretty good! A decent chance of getting in!
But this is one of the toughest years to get into college! We have some of the smartest kids in the Class of 2012.
For UChicago. Everyone got deferred except for the private school kids b/c last year, they overenrolled by 300+ students, so this year, they’re under enrolling at a class size of 700 as opposed to the usual 1000. AND they had a like a sixty five percent increase in applicants this year… So it was hell.
Anyways. Back to the main point. You have a pretty good chance! Match School!
Chance for chance?

Essay: Pretty unique and interesting. Not the usual template people follow for writing essays. I wrote with a touch of irony and humor about myself, but related it back to a goal I have in life.
Recs: Glowing

With a ridiculous RD acceptance rate (around 12%), I doubt the OP has good chances. He’ll be in the running, but I wouldn’t bet on it. Average test scores with a downward grade trend never helps. Work on sending in updates and interviews since the deadline has passed. Send in third quarter grades to balance out your first semester report.

As for Jen, I’d say your chances are around average to below average as well. Maryland is a pretty competitive state by virtue of the PSAT cutoffs (>225) and by the sheer amount of applicants to Hopkins due to it being the top school in the state. Your test scores are also below the median for admits (>1480 this last cycle) coupled with a below average GPA (GPA of admits was 3.88 this last round). This GPA view changes if you go to Poly or City. Those can be considered feeder schools to Hopkins due to the Baltimore Scholars program (if you distinguished yourself in either one of those schools). Things also change if you have minority status or are first generation or come from a low-income bracket, HTH.
