I’m a rising junior and I am considering my courses for next year.
I want to pursue computer science as my major (Carnegie Mellon is my dream school!) and I am considering whether to take AP United States History, SUPA (Syracuse University Project Advance) United States History or Regular United States History.
I’m also taking a class called Math Theory Honors, which I hear is INSANELY hard and it is a very time-consuming class. It is the prerequisite to AP Calculus BC, which I want to take in my senior year.
So should I even bother to take more advanced history classes or should I stick with regular history if I am going to pursue computer science? (I am taking AP World History right now)
Do you have any other history credits? I want to go in to engineering and am taking those courses so that I can get the credit! That way, you probably won’t have to take history in college and you can take some cool computer science electives.
Supa US History should be in between AP and regular in difficulty, right? It would likely be a good choice.
After Math theory would you be able to take SUPA calculus1+2 at Syracuse?
I wouldn’t. I’m a high school sophomore and will most likely go into computer science. Next year, unlike most advanced people in my grade, I decided not to take AP US History and am instead taking regular US History so that I have more time for cs extracurriculars. Same goes for your senior year; I do not plan on taking AP Gov.
I wouldn’t do AP if I were you. If you don’t have any plans on being a history major, there’s no point in putting in a ton of commitment when you have other hard classes that are more relevant to your major. When you apply to college, I feel like the admission officers won’t really care that much about what level you take if you’re pushing yourself a lot in other subjects
