Long story short, I'm studying abroad in the UK. I'd like to travel to Eastern Europe during the breaks. Does it make sense to bring a giant camper backpack? I've never been at hostels before, but I'm guessing they aren't very welcoming to roller luggage?

Well hostels are just as roller-friendly as any hotel or house. The backpack makes the route (getting on/off trains cars, cities, hitchhiking, exploring…) easier.

If it produces any noteable additional costs - leave it. They aren’t that expensive over here.

If you are gonna be travelling for less than 2 weeks at a time, don’t bring anything more than the usual 25L backpack. You’ll probably be able to take it as hand luggage on planes, and you really don’t need more than that.

Rolling luggage in a youth hostel? Forget it – you’ll probably have to go up and down stairs, for a start. Travel light with a small backpack.

By buying a big camper backpack to fit a few days’ worth of clothes (assuming you’ll do your laundry there), you can save yourself from paying $100 (total round-trip) for a second bag on these international flights because you can carry it on.

I got by backpacking around Europe during off time (avg 4 - 7 days) with a large backpack. It was easier to carry, and I preferred it to multiple bags. But when I was there it was warm weather so I didn’t need to pack as many clothes.
