Should I bring formal clothes to college?

I'm wondering if it is necessary to bring something like a suit to college. Are there many jacket and tie events that i should be worried about? How much formal clothing are some of you bringing. (Like dress shirts, ties, or dress slacks)
Thanks

from my experience it really depends on the school. I'm from uva and it seems we take anything as an excuse to dress up. From my experience I'd say bring a jacket and tie for special events (like convocation and greek scene formals) and if you're headed to uva, definitely for football games. ;) One blazer and tie really isn't going to take up much room in a closet and its definitely better to have it on hand and not need it, than not bring it and need it.

from what i hear nyu is the same. except for nyu football. thats nonexistant. lol.

yes yes yes

suits for greek formals, and possibly other types of formals.

Other than those, a shirt / tie will be fine usually.

You dress up to go to football games? Is that a southern thing...? :p

Most schools will have formals, so yea bring a suit.

I bring both and use both. It depends on what you did before you got to college....some folks NEVER wear a tux and others frequently do.

If you're gonna play in the orchestra/ any other musical group other than marching band you are gonna need something. You have no idea how many groans there were the day it was announced in orchestra that the guys needed tuxes for our concerts!

What about girls? I mean... for a guy they can bring one suit and wear it over and over. Girls can't really do that. One dress doesn't really cut it for every formal occasion. So girls, what are you bringing?

skirts would be fine too, I think

Most guys think skirts and dresses are fine.....that is certain!

My mom just told me to pack a skirt or two and nice shirt. I don't understand why, since I'll only be 40 minutes away; it's not hard for her to run something up to me. But she told me to anyway. I never wore skirts in high school; why would I change now?

Because you are gonna pretend to be a grownup.
