I have an Olevia HDTV flat panel LCD 37" and I was wondering would it be a bad idea to bring it to school. I bought it myself. I dont watch it that often but I still enjoy it. Also, I would be gone for 9months without it being used so it would be a waste if I didnt bring it. Also, when I leave for summer, I would still be able to use it because I would take it with me. Is the screen size TOO big or would I run the risk of breaking it. Also, there is a possibility that I will have a common room to use it in and the dorms are Rice seem large.

I do not go to Rice, but everyone in my dorm (except for me and my roommates somehow) brought their big screen tvs. I would recommend bringing it, they are nice.

But wait until you see the room you’ll be staying in. With a TV that big, there’s usually a problem of figuring out where to put it. I have a 27" LCD and there really isn’t enough room in my dorm for it - the only place we could put it was on a little table that takes up half of my roommate’s desk space.

my boy and his roommate bought a nice HD TV and they use it all the time to watch news, movies, play halo, and most importantly watch basketball games :)

my boyfriend refuses to watch sporting events on the TV in my room because it’s so small you sometimes can’t read the score haha…it also has a built-in VHS player…

watching TV in a “common room” can be a nice way to interact. A TV in your room can be just the opposite… or I suppose it can attract folks to your room…

It largely depends on room size and layout. I’ve seen people put large flat screens in their rooms and make it work. I’ve also seen people with tiny rooms where even an extra chair wouldn’t fit. My friends (with TVs) all had TVs in the 19-25 range for the first two years. This year we are living together and apartment style rooms and practically everyone who wanted a TV got a TV that was 30 inches or above.

None of my dorm rooms would have had room for something that ridiculously big. It’s not just having the actual physical place to put it that can be an issue, it’s that you don’t want to be sitting right up against a big TV for the best view.

If you have a common room, you could put it in there… but I wouldn’t want to put something expensive out in a common area unless I knew and trusted my roommates to a) not leave the door unlocked and get it stolen, and b) not accidentally (or drunkenly) bang into it or put a fist through it.
