Should I buy a bike?

Kinda a random question but every NU picture I see has a lot of bikes in it. My new bike got stolen at school.-_- Should I buy a new one? Will it come in handy?

Thanks!

OH also, I was reading dorm policies and it basically had a lot of restrictions against microwaves, hot pots, etc. Are "electric tea pots" okay? It's plastic and has a coil in it? IDK what I'd do without my tea and ramen noodles lol.(:

My D’s dorm had a microwave on every floor, and a kitchen on every floor.

BTW - I say NO to electric teapot, but you should email and/or call NU. they are the only people that can give you the answer, but you should wait until you know what dorm you are in, because amenities will vary.

re: bikes… I used to hate gettting run over by bikes walking around campus, BUT, if you live North, and most classes are South, you can save some time. IF it’s not snowing, or raining. And don’t run me over!

It also depends on what you wnat to do with it in between years…
So it depends on where you live, and if you want to transport it.

Daughter uses her bike constantly even when she lived on campus. When she moved off campus last year we got her saddlebags to take groceries in, much easier than carrying them. Highly recommend it!

Ditto on the bike – get a cheap one you don’t mind living outside in the rain & snow, and a lock. Some quarters my son really needed one, depending on class locations; others, it stayed locked up for weeks. One quarter he really needed it was when he had two classes back to back that were about a 10 minute walk apart. Would’ve been fine, but the first class often ran late, and the second one started on time but with a one-time announcement of the homework. There are shuttle buses, but sometimes not at the exact times needed.
My son’s dorm (Shepard) did not have a microwave on each floor, but did have one in the big kitchen in the basement. I think they are pretty strict about microwaves and hot pots, as they are fire hazards in older buildings with old electrical systems. You also could get hot water in the dorm cafeteria.

There is a bike shop in Evanston that sells good refurbished used bikes - I don’t remember the name but my S bought a used bike there freshman year. I would recommend waiting until you get to campus to decide whether or not a bike makes sense for you. My S used his bike a lot first quarter freshman year, not so much after that (snow can make riding a bike challenging) and not at all after freshman year.

Thank you guys! I might even look into getting a bike now- kind of hate taking a bus or driving. In Chicago, I’d get to school quicker if I rode a bike with all the traffic.
