SHould i buy a laptop now?

my parents plan on buying me a laptop for getting into a very competitive school. Should i buy the laptop now, or should i wait 4 months and buy it in august? I would like to start using the laptop now, but im afraid that better laptops will be coming out, or current laptop prices will go down. If i do plan on buyin it now, i will buy the Hewlett packard dv1659us which uses intel core duo 1.66 ghz with 1gb ddr2 ram and 100gb hard drive for $1299.99 + tax - $200 rebate. Im afraid that the price on this will go down 4 months later or faster laptops will come out for similar prices. DOes anyone know the trends in laptop prices?

Yeah, the prices tend to drop. If you really need the laptop now, then get it now. But if you can survive 4 months without it, then you should wait by all means. By waiting, you will not only get the better price but who knows what new technology might come out between now and then.

Of course prices will go down over time....that will always happen in this industry. Of course if you just use your laptop for browsing the web, checking email, and DVD's it won't make a difference.

Well here are my thoughts

You wait and you'll get all the back-to-school deals

2.Waiting is pointless. Something better, faster, cheaper always comes out. No use delaying what's going to happen anyways.

If you want to get the best deal, then wait.

My recommendation is to get it in August or late July. This gives you enough time to transfer everything from your old computer to the laptop. It sucks if you're not near your old computer and you find out you need something. Giving yourself a month will allow you to remember everything you need.

Check out notebookreview.com forum for reviews & advice. I'm a member of that board, and it's really great.

Prices always drop, especially if you're getting something cutting edge. If you're getting a low end laptop, it's not worth it. However, Core Duo is still new and it will be cheaper later on. Also, if you want to save money, get less RAM factory installed, buy it separately & install yourself. RAM prices have been dropping quite a lot lately.

This Christmas shopping season, you'll be able to get super-low-end laptops for $300. It'll still take a lot of work and research, but it will be possible, just like this Christmas, there were $400 laptops. I got one for what ends up under $300 for a friend, but it takes mad skillz and some luck to pull off something like that.

The prices of Intel's dual core chips will be going down at the end of May. Some models will be going down by over $200. So wait if you're buying one of those.
