I'll be starting CS this fall and was wondering if a Macbook Air would be appropriate for my course. Will classes require linux/windows based computers for certain tasks? Will I require a more powerful computer for certain classes?

Power is (almost? Is there a case?) never an issue with CS so long as the computer is half decent. You do want a Unix system though, which means Mac/Linux. Basically, just don’t go windows and expect the ride to be really smooth, though it can be done. If you are strapped for money, Linux is fine. If you want a Mac, you are in fine shape as you can bootcamp Linux/Windows or run a VM if you have the RAM and need Linux/Windows for something.

You should be adept/comfortable at Windows, Mac and Linux. Powerful computer for college-level programing? Lol.

If you already have a laptop, then no, you should not buy a mac.

You don’t need a mac. But, I personally think macs are much better than windows for developing. After switching from windows, I am absolutely sure that I am never going back.
