i currently have a Sony Vaio FW (16.4 in) and am wondering if i should buy a cheap netbook (around $300). i'll be attending the collge of natural sciences and i dont know if the desks are going to be big or small/ or if i'll have enough room for other stuff.

also, do you see anyone bringing in a 16.4 in or 17 in laptop to class?

A 16.4" or 17" screen is on the large size for laptops in general, so you don’t see too many of them in class. You’ll see plenty of 14" or 15", though. There are way more laptops than netbooks in class. Most of the rooms don’t have desks, they have long tables that stretch across the room and have lots of built-in swivel chairs behind them. You should have plenty of room for your laptop on those. The huge lecture halls that have individual desks have tiny flip-up desks that are small for any purpose.

Nah don’t waste 300 bucks. I saw a girl with a huge 17" mac book pro in a lecture hall. Personally, I don’t even use the desks in the places without tables, I just put my laptop on my lap. The little desk puts my laptop WAY too high up. Everyone behind me can def see my business.

I sat next to a guy with a netbook once and that thing is so tiny and not awesome for notetaking.

Will,
I have the same exact laptop as yours but maybe the screen might be 14 or 15’'. I was looking for a cheap notebook (no more than $500) but most of them have very small keyboards which make it very difficult to type fast during class (defeats the purpose of taking fast notes). Also, they were really slow and not easy on eyes since they were very tiny. I also heard they are slow from a couple of other people. But that’s just my opinion. I’ll be taking my sony laptop & a Hp desktop for using inside dorm room.
