Okay, so today I took three tests in one sitting--Chinese w/ Listening, Math Level 2, and Literature. The last two were pretty good--I answered all the Literature questions with a couple of ones I wasn't sure about, I omitted three on the Math 2, and there were again a couple I wasn't sure about. But man, the Chinese, let me tell you....the listening and sentence fill-ins I did okay on (prob 3-5 wrong), but the reading comprehension murdered me; in a paragraph, there were 1-2 words I actually recognized, not kidding. So I guessed on practically all of those (33% of the test). Funny thing is, I wrote down the Chinese language as one of my main interests on the common app and already sent it in to my uber-competitive ED school. So there's going to some major inconsistencies. I also wrote that I was going to take the SAT IIs in November on there. If I cancel, should I explain to them why? And what would I say? I'm pretty sure that I can do much better on the Chinese if I retake in December-I practically took everything cold today b/c I didn't have time to study (bad idea, I know). Should I cancel in the first place?

I face the same problem. Did pretty well on Chinese, not so well on Math. Want to keep Chinese, but cancel math. I can't do that. But realize that your grades are more important than your SAT performance on 1 test. Perhaps you can contact a chinese professor at your college-explain the situation and give him examples of what kind of work youre capable of in Chinese. Perhaps he will put in a word for you? Just a suggestion.

Thanks, but what do you mean by work? I don't have any writing compositions or anything like that, but I went to Chinese school for three years, and only recently have I gotten into it-that's about it. I'm fluent in it speech-wise, but apparently not quite literate. Right now I'm leaning towards canceling my scores--what do y'all think? How should I explain it to them if I do? Opinions/suggestions needed!

Bump...anyone?

This may be totoally unrelated but my friend got into UPENN with a 540 in spanish (hes doing IR).

Well, if you totally didnt know any of the reading, then youre screwed. That was a large portion of it. The chinese SAT II curve is veyr very hard. If you miss 10+-20+ questions then youre screwed. Either retake or cancel. If you dont have good character knowledge, you cannot just study for 1 month for that section of the test. Character knowledge is gained over time. There will definitely still be words on there you dont know.

aficionado89 -- Pfft. I'm canceling my scores and retaking. No questions asked.

That passage about the plumber and that passage about the car thing...I completely ended up guessing. Like, I only figured he was a plumber because I saw "water" and I only figured the passage was talking about a car was because I could read "car."

And I thought I was good at Chinese. Ugh. I should've taken the test first time it was given -- it was so much easier.

Chinese??? on the Sat???
