I am a biology major right now at a CC, and I truly hate the subject to be honest. I can't stand all the memorization which some people have absolutely no trouble with. I like chemistry, but I have only taken 2 calculus courses and no physics so far (physics and AT LEAST the third calc are required for competitive UC's.) Not including this one, I have one semester left. If I stayed with my major, I would only have to take the second general bio course and the second organic chemistry course (along with some general eds.) If I decide to change to a chemistry major, should I start before I transfer, or after? If I start before, I'll have enough time to complete a couple of more prereq's, but my chances of transferring to a competitive UC would be slim. If I start after, it will take me longer to graduate, but I would have a good shot of getting in in the first place. Please help. I don't know if this is too drastic a move. What should I do? Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can’t hate a subject that is your major.

You’re making the assumption that changing majors now will hammer your chances of transferring. What are you basing that assumption on? (Just trying to understand your reasoning.)

I say that because I would have my bio prereqs completely finished (and something beyond), while I would only have the BARE minimum for chemistry.

If you have only a bare minimum, then your chances are definitely very low. Wait to apply next year or wait to change your major there, but i’m no expert.

Chem has plenty of memorization too, so maybe you’d be going from the furnace into the fire. How many biology and chemistry courses have you taken?

What are your career goals? That’s a big consideration.
