So I wrote my Common App essay back in October, and I liked it back then. I’ve sent it off to 5 schools so far, but I have three left. However, after comparing it to some of the other essays I’ve recently written, I’m starting to notice a lot of its flaws. It’s certainly not horrible, but it’s kind of blander than others, and the writing style isn’t as expressive (the topic is about how I use creativity to make the best of bad situations). Making me doubt myself even more is the fact that my family members admitted that “this essay was their least favorite of them all.”
A part of me wants to switch it out with a great supplement I wrote for one school about my obsession with fonts. The people who edited this essay really loved it (including aforementioned family members), and I feel like the essay has better organization and writing style. The only problem is I feel like the Common App essay should highlight something that’s a bigger deal than just a weird topic I’m interested in. Also, the fonts essay doesn’t quite fit the “personal story” Common App prompt either. While my current Common App essay shows traits like positivity, creativity, perseverance etc., I can only think of the fonts essay showing creativity and maybe quirkiness (if that’s even a legitimate character trait haha).
Should I keep using the blander essay or switch it out for the better written–but not as insightful into my character–one?
(It’s not as much an editing problem as a ‘which one is better’, but I suppose if you need to read the essays to compare them, I could PM them to you.)
