My major is Psychology (impacted)
my gpa is like a 3.26-3.3. It's pretty low, but I know I'll improve it by the end of the fall.

I feel very insecure now, so I'm thinking on listing philosophy (not impacted) now as my major.
I'll be done with the pre req for phil by the end of this fall. I have one more pre requisite for psychology that i'll take in spring.

so should I list philosophy as my main major and put psych as my alternate, or go with my original plan : major - psychology, alternate: philosophy.

right now I just care about getting into the school.

im doing TAP i will be certified by the end of this fall.

but I’m still worried because it’s an impacted major although I heard that if i don’t get into my top choice then that i’ll get into my alternate. I wanted to see if this is true.

If you are set on psychology, put psychology. Just KNOW that if you get in under a different major to UCLA, you WILL NOT be able to switch to psychology or double in psychology. Psychology is so strict a major at LA, that they will not let people switch under any circumstance. I tried to add it as a double, and they were very quick to say that it is not possible and won’t ever be possible in the near future, even though I had every single pre req completed.

The question you need to ask yourself is what’s more important, UCLA or getting a degree as a Psych major.
Once at UCLA, under a different major, you won’t be able to switch into Psych. If I’m not incorrect, Psych is one of the few departments you are not allowed to switch into once you transfer. Even if you don’t enter as a psych major, you’re still allowed to enroll in psych classes, permitted that there is space available in those courses. If you’re planning on going to graduate school for psych, you could technically end up taking enough psych classes as a non-psych major and end up having the equivalent of what would have been a major on your transcripts.

Many psychology majors are also interested in philosophy, and vice versa. However, when you start getting into advanced psychology and advanced philosophy, the differences become apparent and clear. Make sure if you do decide to major in philosophy that you have a good understanding of some of the other major fields (epistemology, logic, metaphysics, etc.) There’s philosophy of psychology too, but that isn’t really one of the big ones.

You’re not getting into UCLA psychology with a 3.3 the average major admit is a 3.7 so, keep getting as many As as possible and hope to get it to at least a 3.7

i’d list philosophy as the alternate. If you list psych as the main and get rejected, you’ll probably still get in under philo. But if you do get accepted then you don’t have to worry about it.

TAP Certified, try to get it above a 3.5, and you will be good. Do not put at as Philosophy, because you will not be able to switch into psych nor will you be able to double major in it. If anything, make Phil your alt major. I know it’s tough, but UCLA is so competitive, and psychology is extremely impacted, TAP helps a lot, but you def need to bring up your GPA.

Sorry for reviving this thread, but i have a similar question. Can one switch to history if they were originally admitted under a different major? I’ve heard that one cannot switch to the extremely impacted majors, such as communications, econ, psych, etc…but are supposedly allowed to switch into english or history, as long as the lower division requirements for the major are fulfilled. Is this true?
