Should I choose Harvey Mudd?

Hey guys,
I've posted a similar message on the Georgia Tech page and got some good inputs, but I guess I should be unbiased and ask from the Harvey Mudd page as well.

I've been fortunate enough to get into two very good engineering schools, Harvey Mudd and Georgia Tech. But I'm having a really tough time deciding between them. I'm an international student and I'm worried about job prospects and student life. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this?

Thanks for all the help!

I’m a parent of a current Mudd Jr. It is a wonderful school. Claremont CA is a “small” town, but there are many activities on the various Claremont college campus’ as well as subsidized activities around the greater LA area. Apparently, Mudd throws the best parties of the 5C’s (told to me by a CMC student I ran into on vacation). Anyway, my D is never bored - I’m not sure the school work load allows time for boredom.

As for job prospects (do you mean after graduation or while you are a student?) For after graduation: [Harvey Mudd College School Salary, Average Salaries | PayScale](Harvey Mudd College Salary | PayScale)

Good luck with your choice.

Please hurry and decide. It could free up a seat for a waitlisted candidate.

sosomenza, the waitlist does not work that way. Hardly any schools take anyone off the accepted list until after May 1 when they can see what kind of yield they got from the students they accepted. Then they can figure out if they still have space in the class to take a few students off the waitlist. Or if more students than they expected already said yes, and they are going to have forced triples in housing next fall! One student deciding early to go somewhere else will not create any movement on the waitlist. The OP can take a little more time to make a decision (although Mudd does require the decision to be “snail mailed” and in their office by May 1 – go figure, how does a tech school not have an online process for this?).

Job prospects at Mudd are among the best anywhere. My son is very happy there, and I’m very happy with it also. I’m not sure what you mean by “student life”, but my son has time for fun, time to sleep, and enjoys his classes. He isn’t much of a partier, but the 5Cs are big enough that you can find all kinds of people there. The professors are caring and good.

Intparent: Why the correction? I qualified my post with could, which means my answer can never be wrong. You overwhelming need to correct is wasted here.

Intparent provided the valuable information that there is no need to rush. Waitlists don’t work that way at all, and it’s important that a student doesn’t feel rushed because of a misconception.

sosomenza- As Gardiner stated to Cranmer: You are strangely troublesome.

OP- HMC is a very different place than Georgia Tech. Tech is one of the best engineering schools in the US with lots of depth, but it’s a hugh school in the southern US which has a very distinctive culture. HMC is a LAC with engineering so you get less depth but more breadth. HMC is completely different than Tech: no frats, smaller classes, etc. You will have great job prospects from either school but your experience will be totally different.

Downsides I see to HMC are grade compression and only a general engineering degree.

Were you able to visit either school?
