Should I choose Landis or Gilchrist?

I'm paying my admission deposit today, I'm in honors so I get priority to either of these. What would everyone recommend? I saw a room in Landis - seemed kind of small compared to other dorms I've seen. How is Gilchrist?

I kinda doubt that you would get either of these choices. What is your priority number? Good luck though.

JT, if your honors, you pretty much will get Landis or Gilchrist. Landis is the honors dorm, and Gilchrist is the overflow. Since you get priority for those two, I am thinking you are in one or the other.

I lived in gilchrist, its nice, quiet, accessible to landis, conveniently located next to the food hall.

My d.s. lived in Gilchrist and loved it. It is a classic college gothic dorm. I myself prefer Landis, especially if you get a room overlooking Landis Green! It has a more open lobby, easier parking for drop off/pick up and a great entrance courtyard from the south side and a great entrance from the Green. However my son wasn't so sure about an 'all honors' dorm, stereotyping the residents. The partial honors, partial non-honors mixture at Gilchrist seemed to suit him, and most of his friends made the dean's list. And not all his new friends came from the dorm. There is great interaction from all dorms, once you find your friends (poker games are great ice-breakers!). I do believe most of the residents of the non-college gothic dorms on the northwest side wished they were on the east or south side.

And the size of the rooms is variable in all the old dorms- since the wall locations have to fit in around the architecture-windows, plumbing columns and just the floor plate configuration makes for variability in room dimensions. So while one may be small, another may be larger. I thought my son's 1/2 of the room was the size of a closet, but it didn't bother him a bit. He considered it part of the college experience. (Ofr course, being by the windows probably helped- if important to you, be the first one to check-in!)

You can change your dorm priority list up until the last moment- the deadline will be online somewhere at the housing website.

And surprisingly, you can change dorms or dorm rooms in January if you are really unhappy. I guess there are drop-outs or other changes that open up rooms in the good dorms.

Welcome to the Nole Family!

Either dorm is nice (Gilchrist was renovated first and was the Honors dorm during the renovation of Landis). The two buildings are actually joined by an indoor walkway (I think on the second floor). Personally, I prefer Landis over Gilchrist, if you get a great view, but that is an if. A lot of honors students place Landis as first choice and Gilchrist to be second.

You may want to check out the facebook Florida State University '12 site. It may give you the opportunity to become acquainted with some other Honors guys who could be looking for a roommate.

Any thoughts on Broward?

I'd put Broward in the class with all renovated east campus dorms. Its like Gilchrist. I'd say its fine.

Yes, Broward is next to Gilchrist, has been renovated, and ranks just under Gilchrist as number one on my D's list. We went to Preview, even though she said yes back in Nov, to be able to tour the dorms as they were all open, with students available for tours. I would say that Landis, Gilchrist, Broward, Reynolds, Murphyee and Cawthone were all near each other and similar in many ways. Murphyee is all women, Reynolds is wellness, and Cawthone is mostly living learning communities. She is hoping for Gilchrist or Broward, and has a low priority number ;).
