I'm a senior in high school and I've had the hardest time deciding between Syracuse University and CUNY Baruch College. I received 42k out of 52k in aid from Syracuse (Grants AND Loans combined). My parents said they can cover the remaining 10k for this year at least but with the loans, I would still graduate 40k+ in debt and I fully intend on graduate school. In Syracuse I intend to double major in Public Relations and Marketing. However, its very unsettling to me to have that much debt and I'm scared of being 5 hours away from home ( I live in NYC ).
My other choice is CUNY Bernard M. Baruch College or simply, Baruch. This college is close to home and while it is a liberal arts school, its specialty is business which is great for my intended marketing major. I would remain close to home, friends and more importantly, I'd graduate DEBT FREE. I'd be able to take out new loans for a good graduate school without worrying about existing debt.
My only problem is that Syracuse U has much more prestige than Baruch since it is a Tier 1 school. Also, Baruch has no campus/college life even if it is still NYC.

What is everyone's opinion? May 1st is days away !! ((

okayyyyy; not gonna quibble about that one…but you would definitely have a more complete college experience there…good luck with whatever you decide…

If you aren’t moving out and the drive to Syracuse is 5 hours, why is it still an option? I would go to Syracuse if that (the distance) was not an issue.

Is this just 40K in loans total? Or are there MORE loans in your 42K? What is the total loan amount for the year? It sounds like your parents will loan your 40K and you have to take out MORE loans from Syracuse? Is this correct?

You should go to Baruch. What’s the point of spending all that money. And Baruch is right next to Wall Street. Syracuse a great school doesn’t have the strength in business like Baruch has. Syracuse has a great public relations program, and Baruch has a great marketing program.
