Should I choose UConn?

Hi - putting this out there for feedback from people (parents and kids) with experience: can you share some reasons to choose UConn, or to not choose UConn? Please assume it’s on the short, short list. Really appreciate it!

What major and what are the schools you are comparing it too?

Admitted to Exploratory ACES and Honors College. Focus is on pursuing a major in the sciences, eg biological or chemical. Choosing among Fordham, BU, Penn State, Rutgers, and Loyola Marymount. Thank you!

It all depends. BU is known for their science majors and has ranks among all university’s. It’s ranked #37 in Physics, #85 for biological science, and #59 in chemistry. Bu is also a well know prestigious university, not an IVY, but close to one. There’s a lot of diversity in the university. UCONN is also not bad but the most top majors are business, engineering, and nursing. Also, UCONN has a more traditional campus it’s heavy on school spirit, and the sports. Honestly both schools are on par, but BU is better in academics terms. PENN State on the other hand has better stats in all the sciene majors they offer compared to BU. PENN>BU (OPINION). Fordham, Rutgers, and Loyola no idea about those schools. Fordham I hear has a reputation for students transferring. If I had a choice I’d go either Penn state, UConn, or BU. The rest is a no go for me. I got into UCONN at storrs, which is the main campus, and I also got into BU. I prefer both.

The rankings mentioned above are for graduate school, they don’t exactly transfer to undergraduate, I wouldn’t chose a school based on those rankings. I doubt that BU is better in academic terms, UCONN is seriously underrated.

Thank you!

@YoungOne4 hard for anyone to tell you what to do.

I’ve visited all of those schools and/or know kids going to them.

I think only BU would be in competition with UCONN. The main difference there is urban environment versus contained campus in middle of nowhere. I loved the UCONN campus, looks like a lot of fun. But Boston is a great College town. So what do you prefer?

The Rutgers campus is a drag but that could make sense if you’re from NJ.

Thank you!

My daughter got into UCONN, BU, Fordham - LC as well for COM. She picked BU for the diversity, urban environment and for the strength of the program for her accepted major. I am a UCONN grad and I really loved my time at Storrs a million years ago. It is a great value school for our family too as we are in state. Good luck.

Thanks, @Asil65. My S eliminated NYU after our second visit a few weeks ago, so it came down to BU and UConn. This week, he decided on UConn. Loved the campus just a little more. Ironically, you are a UConn alum and your S chose BU, and I am a BU alum and my S chose UConn. I wish your daughter the same amazing four years I had at BU, and that my son have the same great time you did at UConn.

@YoungOne4 Yah congrats to your son, I’m still deciding because I have my waitlist schools. I love uconn but so expensive for out of state.

@KoreanPro1011 since today is the decision deadline, I think you are supposed to SIR somewhere while you also await waitlist outcome.

@YoungOne4 That is terrific news about your son. I wish him all the best at Uconn. I still am a huge fan of the fabulous Uconn Huskies women’s BB team. Go Huskies. Great school spirit at Storrs. I studied PT and had some amazing teachers my junior and senior year when I got into my major. I think he will really love it.
