Should I commit 10 weeks of my summer...?

I am a rising Junior, and plan on applying for internships next summer. I plan on applying to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute for a highly competitive internship w/ researchers (1 in 8 applicants accepted). If I get in, could this really set me apart from other applicants, or is this a well known, and common thing to do. I am genuinely interested in Biomedical research, and I want to demonstrate my passion in the best way possible. Is this the best way to demonstrate my passion?

if you genuinely find it interesting and would enjoy it (aka not dragging yourself there and back every day, if you don’t enjoy it its not worth a summer) then it would definitely help you and show to colleges that you are interested in the field

Given the competitive nature of internships, plan on applying for 5 to 10. Identify them by Thanksgiving, have applications, recommendations ready by Christmas for the January deadlines. Look for options on the summer intership section under Pre-college on CC.
