Should I commit?

The financial aid that I received from Notre Dame was pretty generous, but including the estimated costs of books, supplies, transportation...etc. (which they did not state in the letter), attending ND is barely affordable. If my financial aid package is reduced in any way after May 1, we will have trouble financing it.

Is it possible for my FA package to change after I have committed?
Is there any way to back out of a commitment for financial reasons?
My other option is UCLA. Can I still commit to LA after the May 1 deadline because I withdrew from another school?

The FA package you see in the letter will not change for this year. The price you see is the price you will pay for this upcoming academic year. However, at ND, they reconsider every student for aid each year. It’s important to realize that this can be good or bad. Good in the sense that, if tuition goes up (which is inevitable) your aid can also go up. However, because they reconsider every year, you are not guaranteed the same amount of money each year. In rare cases, you could see less aid, but there is usually a reason for that such as less kids in college in your family or your family is making more money. I don’t know about how the deadlines work and how flexible they are with them. If you think that the deadlines might affect you, I would make sure that you call both schools so you know what your options are. My advice would be, if you want to go to ND, do it because they are going to do anything possible to meet your need every single year. Good luck!
