Hello. this month I will be sending in my college application. I have been thinking about what I want my major to be for over a year now... and there is nothing that I absolutely want to do. I heard that colleges really don't like it when students have an undeclared major though... I am interested in science, so I was thinking I could do something like biology... but a biology major doesn't really have a lot of careers in the future. I am also sort of interested in nursing so I don't know whether I should pick that... What do you think I should do? Can you think of any other majors that I might like and have good career options for the future? Thank you very much for your time.

If you are not required to list a major, then don’t, however if you have to apply specifically to a school (engineering, art, music, etc), then obviously you will need to indicate a major and you may find that it will be difficult to switch to a different school once you are enrolled.

Biology has ALOT of career choices. It just depends on what piques your interest once you are taking classes.

You should pursue an education/career in what interests you, not just what pays well. Obviously money is a good thing, but your personal happiness is important too.

Colleges know that most kids switch their majors more than once, so don’t worry about being committed to what you put down today (aside from the situation above).

Good luck.

Try to look specifically at how each college does their college admissions. At some schools, it won’t matter at all whether you are undecided or not and they won’t care. At other schools, it can be easier to get into certain impacted or competitive majors as a freshman, rather than as a continuing undergraduate. At other schools, you might have to apply to get into a particular school or department, and switching between schools can be difficult. There’s no one right answer to this question, but most schools have a way of handling undeclared majors.
