Should I declare a major?

I'm currently enrolled in UCR as Undeclared-CHASS for Fall of 2008. UCR is divided into different colleges, CHASS- (college of humanities arts and sciences), some environmental college, and something else.

However, I'm starting to become interested in engineering, because it's something my dad does and loves, and I feel like our interests are pretty similar so I'd probably enjoy it too. I was never too great in the sciences, but I feel like if I really put an effort into I might enjoy it. Then again, I only made this decision last night so it's really just an impulse.

My orientation for the school is this thursday, and I can change my major before then. If I'm going to wind up in engineering (which is a different college), but I pick my classes based on being in CHASS, then I really might be wasting my time with a few classes. Then again, I'm really not sure if I want to be an engineer.

Is it a smarter idea to just stay undeclared in the college of CHASS, or to take the risk for engineering and if I don't like it switch out?

Hate to bump but..

Generally, it's easier to switch out of engineering than into it. (I don't know specifically about UCR.) If you're considering engineering at all, go for it, and if you don't like it, transfer out. Kids who transfer in generally have to make up a lot of work that could even add a year to your studies.

Yeah, that's a good point.

I'm stressin

If you struggled with math or science in high school, engineering may eat you for lunch. It's all math and science.

I did pretty fine until Calculus, but really I just feel like I did bad because I didn't pay attention.

If you have any interest in engineering and nothing else at the moment, then it's a smart decision to try it out. If you miss a required class for engineering, it may set you back and mess up your schedule.

(summer semesters are also an option if that were the case)
