Should I do Calc 3 using NetMath or try to proficiency?

I am currently in Calculus 2 and am looking to do Calculus 3 over the summer in order to get ahead. I would do it at a community college as it is a lot easier, but that is not an option for me because I will spend the summer abroad. I am having a hard time choosing if I should do the class using NetMath online or study it on my own and take the proficiency exam in August.

As such, I wanted to know if anyone has taken Calc 3 using NetMath at UIUC. My friends taking the class this semester at a regular lecture room have struggled with it a lot (even though they have GPA’s of 3.8-4), with Calc 3 midterm averages being around 50-70%. However, they will be fine as the class is curved in the end. So i was wondering if taking the class through NetMath means the exams will be just as hard? Because that would be a huge risk considering there is no curve with NetMath as there would be taking the class at U of I in the fall, leaving my final grade heavily affected by low midterm scores.

Also, has anyone tried taking the Calculus 3 proficiency exam at U of I? How are would you say it was? Because my I also know people who sat proficiency exams at UIUC and said they make them ridiculously hard because they don’t want many people to be able to proficiency. Note that I would be self-studying the material using MIT’s OCW for Multivariable Calculus

Finally, which would you suggest, NetMath or taking the proficiency test?

P.S: money is not an issue regarding NetMath. My main concerns are getting a good grade in NetMath OR being able to proficiency out of the class so I don’t have to do it in the fall. Also, I got a B on Calc 1 and currently have an A- in Calc 2 (without the final exam).
