So I just got my spring semester grades late last night, and I got a C in my calculus class, which is bad, I know. The thing is, I think I may end up having 79% or so in the class. I was thinking of asking my professor if there is anything I can do (i.e. extra credit or another assignment) to bump me to a B. I normally don't ask or even try this as its usually pointless, but...I really want to ask because getting a B is a condition of acceptance to my uber safety school (i.e. its 20 minutes away so I can just commute and save everyone a ton of money). Since everyone in my family basically wanted me to go there since high school, it would be a shame if I had got in but couldn't go because I couldn't fulfill the condition because I was 1 percent away.

My professor already said he wouldn't bump people up a letter grade if we're borderline because he passes people with anything over a 68%, but I feel if I explain he MIGHT budge a bit.

Should I try it anyway, or just give up since it'd be pointless?

I got 89% in physics during fall and my prof didn’t get me the 1% because he was lazy

I got 89% in english during winter and my prof bumped me back 1% because she wasn’t lazy

First off, you need to calculate what you got in the class before going to him and asking anything. If you have a 78 or something, that’s different than a 79.x so be completely sure of what your grade is.

Second, I am going to assume that you’re a transfer student and have been accepted, but your admission letter said you couldn’t get anything lower than a C or something. Are you a four year student or transferring from a CC? Are you absolutely sure that your admission will get rescinded or whatever because of this C? How are your other grades?

In this case, if you have a 79.x or whatever I would go to him and explain that you have been accepted to a school that you need to attend for financial reasons, and that that .x% is keeping you from doing so. Say that you know that the professor has already said he won’t bump people up, but if you cannot attend the transfer school you will be unable to continue your education next year (or something like that). Ask very nicely if there is an extra credit assignment or extra work available, or ask to see your exam if you haven’t seen it. You may be able to find a point or two somewhere that would help you out.

This is a tough predicament, so tread lightly. Don’t kiss his ass, but make sure he knows the importance of the .x%.

If not, is there some type of grade forgiveness or something you could do? It’s kinda hard to give you good info because your post is pretty vague.

Knight09,

I’m a CC student, and I already have been accepted to a couple in-state schools. The school that I was referring to accepted me but as a condition I must get a B or better in my math class (it is a major required class). I asked my professor about my percentage since I do not know my score on my Final exam. I haven’t committed to the school yet, but on the letter it did say as a condition I need to get a B or better. Other than this one class, I have all A’s, I’m not sure if I should contact the school and see if I can work it out with them.

In that case I would say to wait on what your professor says on your final exam to figure out your exact percentage. If you deem it close enough, talk to your professor and see what they say. If you don’t have any luck there, I would contact your prospective college and see what the deal there is. If that class truly is a dealbreaker (which I find weird, because you usually just need C’s in major classes), see if you can retake the class this summer to fulfill the requirement, either at your CC or at the new college. That may be a possibility.

You will never get what you want if you do not ask… if there is anyway that you can show him proof of the grade needed he might feel exceptionally sorry for you or at least not just think you are pulling some BS.
