I am an entering freshman at Howard University. I am very interested in economics (I have a good grade in AP Micro and plan to make >3 on the exam) and I read policy papers from Brookings, EPI, etc., so I am sure that I’d like economics. However, I understand that economists need grad school (to be an actual economist), so I am looking at top 25 Ph.D. programs. Would a double major in economics and mathematics (with a concentration in pure mathematics) make me a more viable candidate? I’m not very interested in Math, but I’m pretty decent in it. Thanks.
Economics PhD study is heavily math based, so a math major would help. Or courses like real analysis, linear algebra, probability theiry, etc.
