(This is my first thread here and I wasn't really sure if there are similar threads... Thanks for you're time and sorry this will be a little long haha)

I am going to be a senior this fall and I am totally freaking out.

Originally, I wanted to work in Journalism or PR but since the job prospects are REALLY bad for Journalists I thought I should major in a major that will offer me more jobs.
So I took a marketing class and I LOVED IT. And during my first 3 weeks of summer, I was lucky enough to become a trainee at my best friend's uncle's small furniture company. During that experience I was working with sales and marketing managers and I decided I want to major in marketing.

My question being: if I majored in marketing and minored in communications/journalism will I be able to work in Journalism or other media-related jobs.

( I will definitely do many internships for both marketing and comm during college)

OR
should I double major? My only concern would be spending an extra year in college or not doing many internships if I double majored.

You don’t need a degree in Journalism to work in journalism or other media related jobs. If you were to minor in anything I would definitely recommend english over journalism. I am an economics major interning and doing webinars and webnets

I am not interested in English since it involves literature and creative writing etc… I am only interested in writing articles, essays etc for newspapers, magazines or even broadcast journalism.

Will a journalism minor serve me better? Since I will have more time for extracurriculars, internships and maybe then I will have more time so I can write for the college newspaper or something… I need some insight from people with a similar situation!

I am sorry I should have been more specific when I said english i meant a sub field of it. My minor is currently Professional writing and editing (PWE) something like that.

Laylation, my son is looking at journalism as a major. His mother has been in marketing for years as high as the VP level. I had expressed my concerns about journalism as a major and her opinion was that journalism skills are lacking in marketing professionals. So while IllHaveAnother’s point is valid, your thinking also is also alid especially since you want o learn more about broadcast journalism.

Oh…well thank you very much for your help and time I will definitely consider English as a minor!

geo113, so do you suggest a major/minor or a double major? But keep in mind that I can’t afford and extra year in college & I need to do internships + ECs. But I will def take summer semesters!

Since marketing is a business school major, my thought is that it is probably difficult to have a second major outside of the business school. Without knowing your curriculum, it would be difficult to advise. You should speak with your advisor. I know at my son’s school, there is no journalism minor so it would have to be a double major. Furthermore, virtually all classes are restricted to journalism majors. Having said that, if I were you, I wouldn’t drive myself crazy trying to get a double major.

I suppose my best bet would be talking to my adviser…well thank you so much for your help geo1113 and IIIhaveanother93 even if I didn’t double major I wi definitely take as many internships as I can possibly can!
