Should I double major in music and mechanical engineering?

Great thread. I always include “I could be wrong” and as usual @AustenNut has provided great, thorough information. I am curious what the OP thinks. If this were me this would still be a choice between violin and engineering, but the engineering side of the choice would be more complicated!

Oh, I totally understand! To me, music and engineering are two very disparate fields. But since OP seemed to have some interest in trying to meld the fields together, I thought the majors were at least worth a mention. Of course, if I was a musician, engineering would not be my Plan B. But thankfully, there are all types of people! I, too, am curious to read what OP thinks about the ABET-accredited options.

“From the advice I have gotten from my teachers and music directors, it would definitely be a good option to do mechanical engineering, as it provides financial grounding. I am also somewhat interested in science, but I am not even close to being as passionate about engineering as I am about music.”

Seems to me engineering is from folks looking for stability for the student - but it’s not for the student themselves.

I’d be all music - yes, it may not turn out as hoped - but having to study something so intense, and you’re not wanting it - it’s just guidance from others that’s causing you to consider - that’s a no no to me.

Our oldest D was a violist. She played in her HS Philharmonic orchestra (they had 3), the local city orchestra, the regional orchestra and the state orchestra as well as a specialized group called Alternative Strings. She wanted to be an engineer that continued to play her instrument not a dual degree student. She ended up at Purdue which has no music major but does have two orchestras, a Symphonic and a Philharmonic. It was perfect for her and her orchestra was a 2 credit hour class. It gave her an opportunity to enjoy what she did without stressing over it interfering with here primary studies. There were a lot of engineering majors in those orchestras. I wouldn’t be surprised if a number of mid to large sized schools had similar opportunities. Good luck.
