I have a 3.02 GPA and I hope to transfer to UCI in fall of 09. I am currently taking 5 classes for this fall semester and I think it is a handful, so my question is should I drop one of my class that isn't really necessary to my major nor my IGETC and let another W show? I already have 5 other W's because of a unique circumstances and they did not relate to my major or IGETC either. Will the UC's think bad of me dropping one of my classes? This fall semester will be extremely critical to when UC's look at my application but I also don't want the one class to hurt my GPA. I was hoping to get A's on all of my classes but it is really difficult at this point.

go ahead, w's don't matter

So they literally do not care AT ALL?

Well I wouldn't say Ws don't matter at all. If there's a trend where you're dropping classes left and right every semester then yes, they do matter. If it's just one or two then they most likely won't care, especially if the class wasn't even a pre-req. Last year I dropped a 5 unit class with a W because I knew there was no way I could get and A and a B was obviously going to lower my GPA significantly. In your case, I think as long as you explain your situation regarding the previous 5 Ws, you can go ahead and drop your current class.

A UCLA rep. came to my school and said that W's just have to be reported on the application because those are classes tha you had attempted on your transcript, but when they look over it they basically glance over it as if it isn't there. They are not going to penalize you for have W's. I know people that have had upwards of 15 even 20 and nothing happened to them at all, they got in. If you read some of the other posts on here about W's you will see that you're fine.

It won't hurt you it's better drop it if you can't handle it and get a W then a bad grade.

I just called the UCI admission advisor and she said that since I already have 5 W's if I drop a class this semester it will make my application less competitive. T_T. If so, can I still be admitted if I don't get A's in ALL of my classes? Like say 1 or 2 B's?

She's a liar. W's really don't matter as an undergrad applicant. There have been a few people on here that have transfered successfully with 9+ w's.

It will be a problem later on when you apply to a grad school, but that's much later down the road.

The thing is, my GPA isn't high enough for me to relax. I also have one F in a non transferable course (which also isn't an IGETC or a course requirement for my major) but wouldn't it still be a bad impression? If I was to drop a class for this semester, which is most critical because they look at those grades, wouldn't it also seem as if I wasn't trying?

That Rep is full of crappolla unless things DRASTICALLY changed this year.

I had 19ws and went to UCLA

THey do not matter. When they look at your transcripts they simply ignore all the Ws

If you didn't leave your name with the admissions officer the first time you called, try calling again. Hope to hear a different voice. Then ask the same question but don't leave your name. See if you get a very different answer or the identical one. Say thank you and hang up.

Or, be more straightforward and try asking it this way: "I realize that another W makes my app "less competitive" but the problem is, I have to make a choice between two difficult things. I need more information so that I can make an informed choice. Which of the two choices is better or worse for my admission chances? If YOU had to choose, knowing UCI as you do, which way would you recommend doing it?"

The first person on the other end of the phone said something rather obvious (of COURSE another W makes any app "less competitive") but didn't give you enough information to compare situations and make an informed decision.

I think you need additional guidance from them to know exactly which way to go.
Others here are telling you the W's won't matter, but if you're not comfortable just believing everyone posting here, then you might consider calling the university a second time.

Without knowing anything specific about UCI, I'd think that the "W" is just considered a time management strategy, and it would be wiser to present them with the best possible GPA. If you had to add a "W" to get a fine GPA, and you say you feel you can't relax with your GPA due to an old F, then so be it. It sounds to me like if you used your "W" strategy this year, for whatever reason, you will be able to show good grades. . To me, the W only makes you look strategic and that's appropriate and good, not like someone who's not trying. Especially if the grades this term are strong!

Malishka31 - maybe it was because you had a high GPA that your W's didn't matter? I barely make it as "competitive" with my 3.02 and that's only counting the UC transferable courses.

No, i had a 3.54 at the time of application. I dont think that was really "competative"

UCI has agreements for guaranteed admission with most CCs for those that have a 2.8

Thank God!

I just got a W and I was freaking out LOL.. Went around Google and ended up here..

I'm also trying to get in UCI :D

Yeah I know about the TAG but unfortunately I haven't gotten my math portion finished.

I've decided to stick with it since it will affect my financial aid if I drop.

But what I'd like to know is if a couple B's are okay?
