Should I drop a class?

I am 2nd sem freshman and I failed my linear algebra mid term really hard. I got a 40 while the class average was a 60. The professor said he doesn't know what the curve will be like yet. Even with a curve I know that I am looking at a really bad grade. The course is proof heavy and the three tests left will have even more proofs.

At this point I am thinking I should drop it. Currently I am taking 16 credits which includes calc 3, discrete, data structures, and calc based physics with lab. I have an A/A- in the rest and but it is becoming increasingly difficult to dedicate time to them because of linear. Dropping linear will bring me to 13 credits which feels like too little.

The final drop deadline is in a few days before the withdraw period begins. If I drop now it wont ever appear on my transcript and I wont get a W. So should I drop or stick it out?

When my advisees come with the same question, I usually advise them to drop the course (or even take a W if necessary). As you accurately note, doing poorly in this course might adversely affect all your other courses. As long as you are still a full time student, your financial aid will not suffer. You are fortunate to have such a long drop period, at my university, it only lasts the first two weeks and usually the first exam is later than that.

I dropped the course after weighing the pros and cons. It wasnt worth the hit to my gpa or waiting longer and getting a W. I also have enough ap credit that 13 credits this semester should work out.

I agree that I am fortunate. Feels like I dodged a bullet! Hopefully I learn form my mistakes when I take it again semester. Thank you very much for the advice.
