Should I drop an elective?

I some how managed to screw up my macroeconomics class grade. I did all the hw and well prepared for the test. I somehow completely bombed the second midterm exam and my grade is now around B/B- range with no hope of getting it back to A. My question is, should I drop it and get a WD on my transcript?

I am a freshman. Before you think I am overly concern about my grade(to an extend I am), let me say that the class is supposed to be my easiest of the 5 I am currently taking. I enjoy learning economics at one point thinking about getting an econ double major. I chose to take the class purely to fulfill my interest since the class does not count toward my graduation requirement at all. I really don't want to drop it class because not only does it look bad on my transcript but it also makes me feel like I wasted a whole semester. But to put it logically, there is no reason for the class to bring my GPA down as well.

Can you guys give me some advice?

Are you pre-med, pre-law, or in some other situation that requires obsession with GPA (e.g. large scholarship that requires a very high GPA to keep)?

If not, a single B in an out of major course is unlikely to make much of a difference.

If you can’t stand the thought of even a B in an out of major course, but don’t want to drop it, could you switch to a passed / not passed grading option?

My current plan is to attend grad school. Seeing that most top programs require a high GPA as a bottom line for admission, I want to have as much leeway as possible look for research without having to overly concern about my grades for upper division classes.

I will check with the registrar tomorrow to see whether or not pass/fail option is applicable to me.
