I have a 60% in ap calc ab and Tutors/friends/counselors say it’s fine and that colleges dont even look at senior yr, but my JC tutoring person says UC so competitive and the class only gets harder, I hav an A in all my other classes, so i’m not slacking, but i just dont get calc. Ive had A’s/high B’s all classes evry yr. should i drop calc?
You need to keep up all grades Senior year since all college admissions are provisional meaning that your acceptance could be rescinded if you do not meet the requirements of your admission contract.
For most of the UC’s, this means a 3.0 weighted GPA and no D’s or F’s in your Senior year classes. UCB and UCLA require a 3.0 Unweighted GPA, no more than 2 C’s and no D’s or F’s Senior year.
If you are really struggling and do not feel confident you will get a C or higher, then you should consider dropping the class. Are there other options than AP Calculus, like just regular Calculus instead? UC’s do consider Senior year rigor, so dropping a rigorous course could also impact your chances.
I need to talk with my counselor if i can drop calc since it is already a quarter into the year, and there is only AP stat or normal stat. I dont feel confident i can achieve a C, but like I said, I have A’s in all my other classes (AP human geo, Physiology, Eng 4, Econ/gov, and Physics).
So even if i worked hard and got A’s in all my other previous yrs my low calc grade will prevent me from getting into a UC?
UC’s will not see your Senior grades for admission purposes so a C or higher will not make a difference. You do not want to get anything lower than a C in any Senior class or any UC acceptance could be rescinded when your final transcripts are due at the end of Senior year.
If you think you cannot pass the course, C or higher, then you need to change classes. I suggest you consider AP Stats to maintain your Senior year course rigor.
I noticed that you are taking Physics. Both my son’s found that taking Physics concurrently with AP Calculus helped them understand both classes better. Since you are getting an A in Physics, I am surprised you are having issues with Calculus.
How did you do in algebra, trigonometry, and pre-calculus?
if you are confident you won’t pass Calc, i would drop the class.
If you drop the class, make sure you update your common app if it’s already been submitted.
A+ In all previous math classes. Math was my string suit untill now…
Keep AP Calculus AB and then just take BC next year.
Are you working with a good tutor? If not, I would recommend that if you can. If you already have a tutor, it could be that the tutor is not that experienced for Calculus. I would find someone else that could help you better. If cost is a concern, are you using other free resources?
I talked with my counselor and i have till this friday (end 1st quarter) it’s Mon right now, to drop calc with no f-drop and colleges dont see i ever took it. But then i would hav no math senior yr and only 2 ap my whole hs (psych junior and human geo now).
I realize i can just go to community college and transfer but i also feel it is a waste because I worked so hard and got A’s and 1410 on sat.
If i drop i hav much more free time, less stress. But i could save time if i get CC, but it also doesnt cost me much money since fafsa covers 60k for me my 4 yrs.
there’s a lot of pros/cons, but i should keep, work hard and get a C and try to get into davis at least.
I’ve read others on this site from last yr or 2015 in a similar situation and they haven’t died from it. The world still goes on, and hey at least i’m not a syrian refugee or born without a penis.
I have a 63% so far into just limits/derivatives (the easy stuff) but imma work hard and try to get a C-
