The teacher is very poor; my success in that class has been entirely from tutoring from my friends; the teacher himself can't teach worth a lick. Also, the teacher doesn't like me. For example, he wouldn't let me make-up two quizzes I missed, despite his having signed off on permission slips for me to attend MANDATORY field trips for other classes. I try my best in his class, turning in my homework assignments on time- yet, no matter what I do, he seems to despise me, marking work that was turned in on-time as 'late' and deducting points (???).

Because of the missed quizzes described above (Which are weighted at 60% of my grade), I currently have a D+ in the class. If he allowed me to make up said quizzes, I'd have AT LEAST a B, if not an A. I've talked with my counselor about this, and she didn't have much to say, aside from suggesting I talk with him (which I've done, twice, to little avail).

Additionally:
-I received an A first semester
-I'm planning on taking the AP test no matter what, an expect to earn at least a 3

In short, should I just drop and call it quits?

I’m in a similar dilemna unfortunately, so I can understand your pain. I understand how it feels to have a computer science teacher who can’t teach. However I don’t think that you should drop the class, because it seems that all you need to do is make up two quizzes. I suggest that you talk with your principal about this to address these issues. If for some reason your teacher still won’t let you make up the quizzes, then I would suggest dropping the class.

Hi everyone, thanks for the prompt responses!

DaneBrick: The problem is that his stubborn personality seems adverse to letting me make up those quizzes…I should add that I was sick and missed two days of class last week, during which he had ANOTHER quiz (which he didn’t tell us ahead of time. Of course.) So, I just feel that no matter what, no matter how much perfect code I hand in for projects, he’s just going to keep being resistant and I’ll keep getting behind…

Halogen: I’m not interested in software. I’m not really definite on a career path at this point, though I’d like to keep engineering as a potential option. I’m not sure how much computer science will apply to that, especially with how poorly this particular class has been taught.

To All: Will colleges see that I drop the class? And, if they do, will the the A that I received first semester, as well as a (hopefully) high AP score, make the fact that I dropped it irrelevant?

Engineers write tons of code in many different languages, using various libraries and systems like matlab. It will help to become very familiar with a multi-purpose language and to understand computer science concepts like how to design an algorithm.

The drop will go on your transcript permanently. I don’t know if your school puts semester grades or year grades on the transcript, so you could get W for the year or A for the first and W for the second semester. Either way, A vs. W doesn’t matter if you score high on the AP exam.
