I am currently enrolled in Calculus C, and I am struggling a lot with this class. I am applying ED to a very selective school, and I don’t want them to see a C on my first quarter grades. Please Help!!!
So I talked with my counselor, and she said that she strongly recommends that I stay in Calc, and just try really hard to bring my 1st quarter grade up to a B. But by talking to people who have taken this class before, I don’t think it will be possible.
She said that it would look bad for colleges because it would show a withdrawal in Calc, and I wouldn’t be taking a math class senior year. However, I already took 4 math classes, so Im wondering if its ok to not take a math class senior year.
9th grade: Algebra 2 GT
10th grade: Precalc GT
11th grade: Calculus AB AP AND Statistics AP
12th grade: Calculus C AP
Please help I’m really stressed and my counselor is not very helpful.
You seem to have two difficult choices: continue in a class almost certain to produce a C; or withdraw and have the withdrawal on your transcript. I wonder what the rest of your schedule looks like. If it’s particularly brutal, perhaps a withdrawal might be couched as, “I over extended myself, and realized it after a month of school, and made a course correction.” Knowing one’s limits and recognizing mistakes early is also a sign of maturity. I’m not sure whether your circumstances allow for such a way to frame it. Only you have the answer.
Honestly on my transcript it seems like I have a lot on my plate; English AP, Psych AP, Econ AP, Calc AP, Physics AP, French AP, and Mentorship GT
However, I don’t feel like its a lot. Psych is a joke, Econ is fairly straightforward, and Physics has an INSANE curve. I just messed up one stupid test in math, and now Im fighting for my future.
I think, if your other APs represent what the Secondary School Report (SSR) calls “the most rigorous academic schedule,” you’ll be safe to drop Calcium C. Check with your guidance counselor about the effect of dropping the course on your SSR.
You aren’t fighting for your future. And, in the end, getting in or not getting into Harvard will not be a key factor in that future.
That said, you have taken enough math. Drop it and then work with the guidance counselor to include a note explaining that you had taken x number of math classes, and chose to drop Calculus C to better enjoy senior year and focus on X (is there a curricular you could substitute here?)
I know kids who got into Harvard with fewer math classes than you have, and know one who never took any precalc or calculus at all, but that student had some other things going on…
Guys thanks for all the input I really appreciate it. First, I just realized that I posted this in the Harvard University section, lol. I have no intention of going to Harvard, and I know my capability as a student.
Second, I got a 100% on my last quiz! My grade jumped up drastically and now I am very close to a B. We still have one test and a quiz for this quarter. Thanks everyone.
