Should I drop calculus senior year or stay.

I’m currently in a normal calculus class senior year and was wondering what I benefit from taking it. Its not a AP class and highly doubt I’ll be ready for it even if i decided to take it, also I leave two periods later then most of my friends due to having to also take another class I need to graduate, please let me know what you think, thank you.

What are your college plans and intended major? Have you applied to any colleges yet?

I’m looking to major in computer science for sure and looking at colleges like ccny, stony brook, and queens college mainly.

CS is very math heavy so having Calculus in HS will give you a good basis for the many college math classes needed for your degree. Do not drop the class.

I agree…stay in Calculus. It will prepare you for taking Calculus in College which you will need for CS.

Honestly don’t plan your HS career around what you’re friends are doing.
Next year when you are in freshman Calc class you can either be:

  1. Happy you took it as now you are familiar with the concepts so it is not that hard
  2. mad at yourself because most everyone else has calculus background and you are starting from scratch.

Future you will thank you.

I understand it will help me when I take college math in college but will it help at all applying for colleges as I feel I can just study well in college as right now I am so sick and tired of school feeling depressed especially since I still have a heavy workload

Yes, it will help in applying for colleges…if they see you dropped out of calculus or had the chance to take it but didn’t that woudl not bode well.

Talk to your GC about other things you could drop that would lighten your load.
Also talk to them about feeling depressed as you might be depressed.

What other classes are you taking? When thinking about what you might drop, don’t just consider graduation requirements, think about college entrance requirements too. Check the requirements at the schools where you’re applying. Since you’re interested in CS, note that competition may be fierce.

For a STEM major, you need calc. It will help you when applying to schools and will help you have a better foundation for your college calc.

You want to be a STEM major. You need Calc. Yes as a future CS major (one of the most competitive majors out there) you need calculus: colleges will know you could have taken it and chose not to. Why should they admit you for an even more intensive curriculum where calculus is a staple?
What else are you taking? Perhaps there’s another class you can drop.
