I’m a high school senior that is currently drowning in work. Many of my friends decided to take it easy, and while I certainly did not take 5 AP classes, I still chose to take a few, one of which was AP Physics. We are almost finished with the first semester and I’m barely scraping by with a B-. I don’t understand the material and watching review videos don’t help.
If I did drop, I wouldn’t have any other science classes to take because I have already taken Bio H and Chem H, the only two sciences I have taken in high school, and the other regular physics classes are completely filled. I understand that I would have to notify the colleges of any changes in my schedule. I’m just worried that I am overworking myself and I’m not sure what to do. (FYI, I have not dropped any classes before.)
What is your intended major in college? What types of colleges are you applying to? Check out the requirements listed on their websites. Most will tell you how many years of science they prefer/require. Have you spoken to your teacher and guidance counselor about this? Are others in the class struggling as well? Could be a teacher who isn’t the best (my S had one in HS for physics, too). I’d start by speaking with the teacher and guidance counselor explaining your concern. Maybe they could find room for one more in a regular class. Really, a lot depends on what you intend to study, where you are hoping to get in, and how badly a B (or even a C) would impact your HS GPA.
I am hoping to pursue a degree in Economics at UCSB. I have spoken to my teacher about it, but he’s relatively young and doesn’t know how it’ll affect my GPA/college acceptance. For the UC’s, it says that they require 2 laboratory sciences, but 3 is recommended. I’ll talk to my counselor but I think I’ll power through the second semester. 2 years of science seems menial compared to my peers so I’ll tough it out. Thank you!
