I’m in my first semester of college taking a Drawing class. I typically really enjoy drawing and I’ve had people tell me that I’m good/should go to art school, etc, but this drawing class is really making me hate drawing in my spare time which sucks because I love drawing. When I draw in my free time I worry that it’s not good enough, I’m not doing it the right way, I obsess over every single little detail…not fun ;( …when I’m in the class I feel really incompetent, my drawings don’t come out how I want them too(we don’t even draw using pencils…theres a super specific way my teacher wants us to draw and everyone is getting good at it while I suck at it :/)…it’s just really stressful and frustrating to me and I kinda wanna drop it. But at the same time, I think it’d be me giving up to easy…in life I’m gonna have to do things I don’t like/not good at, so maybe I should stick it out. I don’t think I’ll get a good grade in this class tho…sigh
I was in a similar predicament last semester. At my school we have to take two art classes, so I signed up for a class that I ended up dropping because even though it wasn’t a drawing class or anything like that (it was Art History) she graded me so hard on the little assignments I had to do. I’m not an art major and there’s a reason I’m not an art major so why are you surprised I can’t draw? I’m in another art class now and love it because he doesn’t grade me like I’m Vincent van Gogh.
As for you, if you’re not scared of the possible bad grade at the end bringing down your GPA or something, then you can continue on in the class. It’s best to decide now before it’s too late.
Why are you taking the class? Is it for fun, for a GE, for your major? If you’re just taking it because you thought it would be fun, then I say just drop it (as long as it doesn’t affect anything, like your financial aid or anything). I don’t think it’s worth the stress to take it just for the principle of the thing.
If you need the class for a GE, there may be easier or more enjoyable ones that you can take. Just make sure that you have enough room in your schedule so that it doesn’t affect your graduation date or anything.
If you need the class for your major, then I think it may be better to just stick with it. If it’s a class you have to take regardless, then you might as well get it over with now.
If you don’t have to take it, and you don’t want to take it, don’t. Drop it like it’s hot.
Yes, there are things in life you are going to have to go through even if you don’t like them, but this isn’t one of those things.
Don’t pay to be miserable.
Do you know what your grade is currently? I would consult with your advisor and see what your options are. I wouldn’t want to be in an art class that stresses me out. There are definitely more important things to worry about.
