Should I drop my sport senior year? Will this hurt me for admissions?

I’ve been playing a varsity sport since freshman year, but I’d really rather not play this spring semester since its a huge time commitment, and my course load this year is by far my hardest so far. I don’t particularly enjoy the sport (and the coach can be a bit exhausting), and I’d like to have some more time to enjoy my last semester in high school. However, I already indicated I would play this year on my common app. I would appreciate some guidance on a few questions.

  1. How important is 4 years of a varsity sport? Would it contribute anything significant or meaningful to my app? If so, I might just tough it out.
  2. Would colleges be irritated if I dropped something I indicated I would do? I realize I would have to contact each school after dropping the team, and give them an update.

P.S. I am not a recruitable athlete.

Just another EC. Send a note to the schools that you’ve decided to drop the sport for your last semester. Shouldn’t be a problem at all.
