I play the viola and am first chair in my class (top orchestra), and I make All-Region orchestra every year, so I am not that bad. My only problem is that I hate it with a passion–I am really just staying in orchestra to make it look good on college apps, as it is the only place in which I have actually gotten some awards. Furthermore, I feel really out of place among the people in my class, as they are all super passionate about the instrument they play, yet I am not so much. However, I am at the top of my class and am involved in a bunch of STEM clubs, and I play a sport as well. Would it be worth it for me to drop orchestra next year for other AP classes, Research, or a study hall?
First thing: Alto clef is love, alto clef is life.
Second thing: If you hate it, why are you still doing it? Don’t do stuff you hate for colleges!
Also, unrelated: Can you PM me with instructions on how to change my profile pic?
If you hate it, don’t do it. Simple as that. What makes me happy might make someone else miserable. You’re automatically doing something for the wrong reasons if it’s only because colleges like it. I can understand where you’re coming from though. I love to play, but school orchestra can really drain the pleasure out of making music sometimes.
Edit: Also, cellos are the best. That is all.
Don’t do things you hate. You’ll most likely be better at things you enjoy.
If you drop orchestra, it should NOT be for a study hall. It MUST be for something else - another art or performance group, perhaps? Research would definitely be the best, ahead of AP classes.
